What do we actually "see" how much is filtered by our brain so that we can process it?
We can observe the world around us but how it appears to us as human is vastly different from how it appears to our animal companions and even from other humans we share our lives with. Some people are colour blind - distinguishing between green and red can be a challenge, certain shades just all blend into a murky mucky colour (that is why at an eye test they check, especially for driving!). Others have limited peripheral vision, or maybe macular degeneration. We don't all observe a room in the same way. It is the same with our animals, some breeds of dog are bred as sight hounds, being able to spot quick flurries of movement at a distance; others are scent hounds so their vision may not be as acute; and there are some breeds that are notoriously short sighted. Along with all that dogs see with a different colour palette being dichromatic (seeing in the yellow and blue spectrum) this means that they don't see grass as green and cannot differentiate shades of red or pink. However, they are better at seeing in the dark than we are. Horses are similar to dogs in how they perceive colour but due to the set of their eyes they have a broader field of vision. However, their blindspots are directly in front of them and behind them. When you touch a horse's muzzle they cannot see your hand but they know it is there because they can feel it with their whiskers. There are other animals who can observe UV & IR frequencies; birds that have a far faster flicker vision so can process fast moving objects; even as humans we differ in our flicker speed, which is why some sports people have quicker reflexes, they see things differently. Taking those few brief snippets into consideration ponder on how much of the world around us we actually "see" by using HelioSol Technique and AgapeMind we can change the way we see the world around us, making it less frightening and thereby reducing our stress responses. The information that we get can come in various different forms:
heard, seen, felt, smelt or tastes. How we impart the information we get is down to our belief systems and filters about what we have experienced in a similar situation in the past. Did we have a positive or negative experience when we tasted chocolate for example; or when we saw snow for the first time did it make us laugh and experience joy. How we feel and what we believe about the situations we encounter will govern how we move through life. We can either learn these through our own endeavours or we are taught behaviours by our parents, guardians, friends and peers. Sometimes these filters and belief systems cause us stress and do not benefit us in the long term, by using the HelioSol Technique we can change those belief systems that are no longer doing us service and reduce the stress in our lives. For most of us we use verbal communication but sometimes that can be misinterpreted or misrepresented. Visually we can use our bodies to express how we are feeling about a situation. Our animals however have other ways of communicating that have been lost to us through the 'noise' of modern life. Our animal companions can teach us so much about ourselves and our lives if only we stopped and listened to what they were saying or attempting to show us about ourselves. Over the next while we will be exploring these ideas at Slievenamon Holistic Therapy using the HelioSol system and other techniques. If you would like to learn more about yourself / your animals please come and join us for Instructor sessions at the end of Jan 27th & 28th, where you will get the opportunity to either have a session or just observe how the HelioSol system works. In Feb we will be taking it a step further with the Foundational HelioSol Technique which you can integrate into your existing practice, use on yourself and on your friends, family and animals. When in March we do the Foundational AgapeMind giving you the skills to enhance your intuition and use your mind with far greater effectiveness. All of these are stand alone modules. We would be delighted if you could join us for one or all of them to start using your senses to greater effect and thereby making life less stressful and easier to navigate. More information can be found here As 2023 comes to a close it is time to start thinking about the new. As one part of life passes through the 'winter' of its existence another is starting to emerge. We are always stepping out each day into a new adventure, observing the world with new eyes, new perspectives allowing ourselves to be curious and explore the opportunities that are out there. 2023 has opened doors that I did not even see or have comprehension of; opportunities that I thought were there were just a figment of my imagination, but they are still there waiting for their perfect time to come to fruition. So looking forward to 2024 - I am posting here a few dates to whet the appetite, maybe it may make you consider another course with another instructor, whatever you decide it will be the perfect decision for you. Every good wish Sacha Last week in the rain we went off to explore how we can utilise the HelioSol System, Technique and AgapeMind for not only our health and happiness but also for the animals that live with us. https://vimeo.com/866208848?share=copy This video gives a flavour of the what we work with, I trust that you will find a resonance with the material or if nothing else it will make you be curious to learn more. If anyone has any questions please do not hesitate to get in touch. To each of us our concept of Freedom is different and we each have our unique set of bars and perimeters that prevent us from experiencing our true nature and freedom to live our lives as we were meant to.
For many of us we do not realise that we are being held captive by our own belief systems and our limited understanding of what is actually possible. I have been very blessed in many ways throughout my life but I did not realise that I was still being my own gaoler, that my beliefs were creating bars and walls to prevent me from moving through life with ease and grace. Through working with some wonderful teachers both human and animal I have begun to realise and experience living in a whole new way. I am delighted that I have the opportunity to share with you both the HelioSol Technique and AgapeMind; two courses that meld together to give you the tools to change your perspective and experience the world from a place of love, compassion, understanding and non-judgement. www.slievenamonholistictherapy/courses For Freedom - John O'Donohue As a bird soars high In the free holding of the wind, Clear of the certainty of the ground, Opening the imagination of wings Into the grace of emptiness To fulfil new voyagings, May your life awaken To the call of its freedom As the ocean absolves itself Of the expectation of land, Approaching only In the form of waves That fill and pleat and fall With such gradual elegance As to make of the limit A sonorous threshold Whose music echoes back along The give and strain of memory, Thus may your heart know the patience That can draw infinity from limitation As the embrace of the earth Welcomes what we call death, Taking deep into itself The tight solitude of a seed, Allowing it time To shed the grip of former form And give way to a deeper generosity That will one day send it forth, A tree into springtime, May all that holds you Fall from its hungry ledge Into the fecund surge of your heart. In whatever field one works in there is a fine line between helping and hindering a client, whatever species they happen to be and whatever the modality may be. As therapists we also have the same obligations to ‘do no harm’. This is not always an easy distinction to make - when to stop and say enough is enough. It is easy to call when you are whipping cream, you can see when to stop as the cream starts to turn to butter. It is visual and so many of us now only rely on our visual sense that we forget to trust the gut instinct, ending up over egging the pudding as it were so that there is no space for healing to occur. We also have to remember that we are not actually ‘doing’ anything just allowing the client to create within themselves the optimum environment for healing themselves. How we achieve that is down to each in their own way but one must always be aware that we cannot heal anything, we are just there to help the client. That help may be practical, providing food and water, a place of safety; it may be emotional support or the environment where the client can express and release all the built up stress and tension held in the body; it may also be providing a quiet observation of the situation so that the elements that are required to heal are slotted into place. To keep the cooking analogy going, our job is to put out all the ingredients that may be required to bake a cake, the tins, the utensils that will be needed but then we hand it all over to the chef/baker (client) to do the creating; how it turns out is none of our concern but we are there to help not hinder. It is a hazard that is easy to get caught up in ‘ the need to DO something’ sometimes doing nothing is a greatest gift that we can give. Other times the ego demands that we do something as the ego forgets that whatever technique we use it is down to the client to heal themselves. I have seen Drs and vets inject joints to relive pain, it works for a short period of time or may have a long term effect, in my opinion it is not the Dr, the vet or the drug per se, it is the time that the affected area requires to heal itself once it is given a helping hand to get over the initial issue - if the client is in the environment to heal then they will, however this in not always the case due to the fact that the ‘environment’ of the body may be compromised, the living conditions may not be suitable, the mental/emotional issues at that time may not be conducive to healing. By always being there for a client we may also be hindering their recovery as they become reliant on us ‘healing’ them not being fully aware that we are just there to help and it is down to them to heal themselves, there is no silver bullet. By doing sessions on demand we are are not respecting their space or respecting ourselves, sometimes stepping back and giving them the time and space that they need is the hardest thing to do especially if you have a limited book of clients. At the end of the day though by acting with respect and integrity saying ‘enough is enough’ their body may get the opportunity to do what it needs to do. We just have to learn to remove ourselves from the equation - it was never our issue to begin with and there is no reason why we need to have ownership of the outcome. When we observe this from the philosophical perspective it is a case of Wu Wei - without doing, causing, or making ie letting things happen with no egotistical effort or input; we let the body work with its own inner wisdom, the natural order of things and since the natural world does not make mistakes, whatever is meant to unfold will unfold in its own perfect time. Life keeps going and I know that there will be other horses, other days, new adventures.
Bree was part of the 'old' cycle and getting me where I needed to be, guess he knows more than I do as I am not quite sure where I am or where I am going. It feels a little like you have had a navigator for a trip or a friend to walk with you but about 100yards from your destination they say ' just down there, you can't miss it, first on the right, this is where I stop'. It seems that last 100yards is the longest and hardest part of the walk and you wonder if you got it right, did you miss the spot, were you on the right path. You know what though - the place will come around again, life is a circle we keep going around and around and occasionally someone/thing from the past / future steps into our reality to assist. All my life's a circle; Sunrise and sundown; Moon rolls through the nighttime; 'Til the daybreak comes around. All my life's a circle; But I can't tell you why; Season's spinning round again; The years keep rollin' by. It seems like I've been here before; I can't remember when; But I have this funny feeling; That we'll all be together again. No straight lines make up my life; And all my roads have bends; There's no clear-cut beginnings; And so far no dead-ends. I found you a thousand times; I guess you done the same; But then we lose each other; It's like a children's game; As I find you here again; A thought runs through my mind; Our love is like a circle; Let's go 'round one more time. I found you a thousand times; I guess you done the same; But then we lose each other; It's like a children's game; Songwriters: Harry Chapin Circle lyrics © Harry Chapin Foundation |
